THE PAINTING & DECORATING ASSOCIATION (PDA)

The Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) was established in 2002, following a merger of the British Decorators' Association and the Painting & Decorating Federation. The British Decorators' Association was originally founded in 1894.

With some 2,500 members this new organisation is Britain's largest trade body dedicated to the painting and decorating trade. Members include sole traders through to large-scale national contractors.

Decorators looking to become members of the PDA are rigorously vetted prior to admission. Members are committed to the highest standards in health and safety practice, as well as training development.

The PDA is proud of its long history and high standards, and a registered member can be relied upon to do a good professional job at a fair price.

WHY USE A MEMBER

Painters and decorators often come into people's homes and businesses - so customers want to know that person or company is to be trusted.

Before being accepted for membership of the Association, companies and individuals are rigorously vetted and prospective members have to fulfil a number of requirements, including the production of evidence of more than five year's experience in the industry.

They are also obliged to carry adequate public liability insurance and references. Once accepted, members are then subjected to random checks to ensure high standards are maintained.

The PDA also investigates all complaints made against any members and endeavours to resolve any disputes through mediation.

CHOOSING A GOOD PAINTER AND DECORATOR

Cheapest is not always best in the long run, as many people have found to their cost. It pays to shop around to find a reputable firm who will give you an agreed price for the work to be done.

Customers should always ask:

* Is the firm adequately insured?

* Is the quality of materials guaranteed?

* Will the work be done by competent tradesmen and properly supervised apprentices drawing fair

wages?

* Can I be sure the quotation is fair to all parties in order to ensure a good, lasting job?

* Will the decorator give a guarantee on his work?

It's easy to be taken for a ride by the cowboys - it pays to choose a qualified professional.

Ultimately, PDA members are qualified, fully insured and able to produce work of quality. They are also conversant with the latest technology and work to a code of practice.
